The Seattle quake reminds me that our racer friend Ken Walkey lives where
the ruptured gas line was blazing from under the street after the last big
LA quake. I'm sure you all remember those pictures from TV coverage of the
event. Luckily, and unlike Ken, Dave Haller and Steve Pitt seem to only
have wild memories after yesterday but no damage.
Once again it reminds me that we here in Salt Lake City, live along the
Wasatch Fault. My wife teaches school and took an "earthquake" class as
part of re-certification a few years ago. From her information we know the
following; The actual fracture line is 1/2 mile from us, 1/4 mile from
USFRA Treasurer, Hugh Coltharp and a few feet from the home of Bonneville
radio announcer and record holder Ron Christensen. Dave and Carol Koehler
who are one of the primary safety teams on the salt live about 1/2 mile from
a point near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon where seventeen fault lines
intersect.
Salt Lake (as well as the Bonneville salt flats) is located over an ancient
lake bed and should an earthquake hit, liquefaction (as was experienced in
the San Francisco earthquakes where the substrate turns to mush) could do
the greatest damage.
... and we were wondering what Andy Green breaking the sound barrier with
the accompanying shock wave would have done to the Bonneville salt surface!
It messed up a 1/2 mile swath on the desert floor at Black Rock. Viewers
said the ground looked like scrambled eggs.

23-25 T body is the same, 26-27 is a more streamlined body. My question is
why are the 15-22 bodies not allowed? If you put a 15 and 23 roadster body

Joe,
Don't forget to increase the withholding percentage for 2001 so you won't
have an even nastier surprise in twelve months. It's amazing what working
just two days a week, on commission, with the proper number of dependents
claimed for withholding, can fail to cover when tax time comes.

Bob, Paul, list,
Usually I'm pretty good at history. On this one I have to plead ignorance -
the year breaks were already set into the rulebook prior to my arrival in
1963. I don't remember disscussions at rules or board meetings about
changing the year breaks, although I'm sure there must have been some in the
last 35+ years.
The only pre-'27 Ford I know of currently running is Russ Meeks handbuilt
'23 XO/FMR.

Jack, list,
New helmet skirt rule;
All drivers, includes motorcycle streamliners, must wear a helmet which
meets specs with either a built-in skirt which would go into the suit
jacket, or an external helmet skirt. The external skirt is a add on piece
which attaches to the outside of the helmet, generally with Velcro.

This sounds like a good precaution to take and it only takes a second to do.
How to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not. (Not a joke!)
Not to scare you, but to make you aware. This was passed on by a policewoman
who travels all over the US and gives seminars and different techniques for
businesswomen.
HOW TO DETECT A 2-WAY MIRROR When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms,
changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly
ordinary mirror that is hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or maybe it's
a 2-way mirror? (i.e., they can see you, but you can't see them.)
There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female
changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by
just looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty
what type of mirror we are looking at?
Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail against the
reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the
image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror. On the other hand if the
fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE... IT IS A
2-WAY MIRROR!
So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the "fingernail test." It
doesn't cost you anything. It is simple to do, and it might save you from
getting visually raped!
Remember: "No Space, leave the place!"
Ladies: Share this with your girlfriends.
Men: Share this with your wives, daughters, girlfriends or any woman you
care about.

My guess is that the "traditional hiboy roadster" was usually based on the
Model "A"(28-31) or the "Deuce"(32), thus the break at 1928 for fuel and gas
roadsters. The early modified roadsters were usually the slimmer and smaller
"T"'s, usually the 1923-27's, thus the earlier year break.

Jim, I would think you should be able to purchase this IAC motor from any
auto parts store. I believe Standard Motor Products makes one aftermarket.
You might do better on price right from a Chrysler dealer. Hope this helps,

well, I relived my youth today and you know what? The youth can have it!
My son calls me last night and tells me that he has found a body to use for
his comp car/dragster project. Will I go with him today to get it? Sure,
no problem, come over at noon. So off we go to Maine. Now Maine is a funny
state. Mostly populated by folks that talk funny and live in mobile homes
with the wheels still on. Only difference between rural Maine and
Appalachia is they get a lot more snow in Maine and they have moose. Anyway
we go to Carelton's (better known to the hot rod community as "hoho" due to
his cackling laugh) Junkyard emporium of wonderful stuff. Forty two old
school buses so packed with junk you couldn't get in the doors to see what's
there. Then several acres of frames, bodies, etc, most of which a
respectable steel recycler wouldn't take for free. First thing I note is
that Carelton, recently married for the first time right after he retired
from the East Eliot Garage, has spruced up. He no longer uses those orange
handled clamps to hold his pant's fly shut but now has a real zipper. Also
there appears to be a lot less grease on him. His wife, a charming rural
Maine debutante with less teeth than her husband came to the marriage with
countless children and various other family members who now dwell in a
section of the junkyard in various structures mostly made from trailers
interconnected with scrap lumber breezeways. Out into this Disneyland of
old tin we go. First thing I hear my son say is "gee, it snowed and I'm not
sure where the stuff is". Should have turned around then and found a Dunkin
Donuts. Anyway we stomp around in ankle deep snow, except for those times
when the snowbank isn't a snow bank but a pile of scrap covered with white
snow. In those cases, your leg disappears up to your knee followed by
contusions to your shin and a shoe full of snow. Oh boy, what fun. We find
his prize! It is the back half of a Model A tudor sedan. He had assured me
it was free from the frozen ground. Ah the impetuouness of youth. One side
and the back were free, the rest was similar to one of those mammoths over
in Siberia. Encased in solid ice adjacent to a large elm tree. After an
hour chopping with a sign stake we found, the side is freed. Now where are
the doors? He can't find them so we trudge through old Divco milk trucks
and the cowls of a dozen '49-54 Chevy pickups and finally locate two doors
that will work. They say '35 Buick on them but the shape is right and we
only need the skin and window opening. A cowl is found, probably Model A,
filled with snow and ice. We can barely lift it from its resting place and
stumble across the snow covered landscape tripping on concealed bumpers and
frames, using what the Navy taught me were a "few well chosen expressions in
a time of stress". Now the shopping list is complete. We turn the body so
that the rear panel is down in the snow and pile the other parts on top. We
both pull this pile across the snowy road, negotiating the snow pile speed
bumps Carelton has on the yard roads as if anyone would want to make a
midnight foray into this scrapheap! Now I know how those Egyptian
conscripts felt that towed those blocks for the pyramids. We only lacked
the whip carrying overseer. We stop to pay for the "treasures" and see that
a dozen little kids who call Carelton "grampy" are around his shop wood
stove performing mayhem with various tools from his box. Carelton laughs
and tells us they are learning about tools today. I step back when a
precocious six year old shows me a evil looking hatchet and tells me with a
demented gleam that is "wicked sharp, eyah". We quickly give Carelton his
toll of twenty dollars and depart. By now, my shins hurt, my feet are wet,
I am tired and really in need of a good hot coffee. To think I did this in
my salad days and thought is was fun. But my son is showing me sketches in
the snow of how it will come together and I reminisce on how it was to be
that young and excited. I write this with dry jeans and socks on and a hot
cup of tea made by Miss Linda. Life is good after all.
regards, John

Phil and Gary,
Check out HTTP://wwwchapmanthermalproducts.com for information on CarbonX.
After seeing their demonstrations I'm a believer. Kind of like buying a
cheaper helmet when you can get one that will really protect your head for
20% more. These suits breathe too ... nice when you are waiting in line on
a hot day.
Alterations are not a good thing to do when you have welted seams and a
fabric that would unravel rather quickly at raw edges. Everything I have
seen has been serged on the edge of the individual panel before assembly.
CarbonX is quite durable and they have knits for sox, shoelaces, gloves and
even helmet liners and headsocks/balaclavas/thingamajigs. Mike Chapman has
a pair of exercise shorts he wears when he works out that have held up as
well as a polyester knit would have done.

be lower then the Pump?
Here is my current situation.... the Pump is about level with the Mid point
in the tank... about 3" below were the oil return lines go in.... and about
8" higher then the Oil pick up in the bottom of the tank.....
My concern is Oil draining back into the tank and having to draw Oil into an
Empty Oil Pressure line everytime the car starts.... Should I put in a
little extra line to create a trap like a sink?

Nothing trick here, no flames, just a dumb ignorant ex Alabama wienee with

The motor is at full boogie heading down the track. The engine has been tuned
pretty good so cylinder filling is good, well actually more than 100% due to
ram tuning (yeah, I know that most cars have around 80% cylinder filling
efficiency). So the air is really going into the motor. Now the nitrous hits:
this stuff is a cold fluid that rapidly expands as a gas as it goes into the
manifold along with the extra fuel. Now here is my funny question: since all
the air that can be put into the cylinders is being put in there already how
does the extra nitrous and fuel get in? Does the expansion of the NO2 act like
a blower forcing more into the cylinders? If so, then how come it does not
blow out the carb or throttle body? This is a puzzlement to me. I know it
works but ...

DrMayf, please except this response as simply coming from somebody who
uses the stuff, and does not claim to be the magna-fluid/thermal engineer.
To my limited knowledge base, the induced charge is simply more oxygen rich
thanks to the nitrous. In other words the induced column of air and fuel, runs
into
and picks up and or is drug into the nitrous/fuel mixture. I am told that on a
port
type system the port velocity actually does increase with the nitrous on, with
nozzles
injecting at 90 degrees to the port wall, even with the nitrous expansion in the
port.
Dont have a flow bench handy to prove it.
As to the column of air fuel mix that eminates from the port away from the valve,
as I am told during dyno testing is very impressive, on say a motorcycle cylinder
head
with individual cylinder induction systems, and surely this column is full of
nitrous as well, and
I must assume contributes to airbox explosions on bikes, that has plagued many the
past few seasons in drag racing.
I am sure Dahlgren, who gets to dyno many nifty motors can shed some light.

Jack, list,
New helmet skirt rule;
All drivers, includes motorcycle streamliners, must wear a helmet which
meets specs with either a built-in skirt which would go into the suit
jacket, or an external helmet skirt. The external skirt is a add on piece
which attaches to the outside of the helmet, generally with Velcro.

KT,
Forgot about the trailer. Two cents from the turn left community. First,
our tank is about 8" higher than the pump. The pump is located even with
the oil pan. This will keep the lines full. You will see a slight delay in
getting oil pressure no matter how much you prime the system. Ours is about
a second or so. Pretty un-nerving. Also, we are using 2 bands and 2 probes
to heat the oil. Cuts our heat-up time to an hour or so (or in your case 2
diet cokes and a couple winston lights). We run -16 lines to and from the
tank as well as an oil cooler. Our capacity is 14 qts - yours may be less.
On the heating subject, I saw something at our last race in Lakeland, FL
last week. A guy got caught heating the rear-end oil before qualifying.
Seems he had a probe heater stuck in the vent on the center section. I
can't see the advantage in round track unless you tape up the rear cooler,
but in our case, might be some extra rear hp. Just a thought - not that I
would do such a thing (time to re-wire the heaters and put a real vent in!).
Take care,
Jim

Subject: Re: Nitrous Question
Larry what i have seen is this, when the nitrous hits the
first thing it does is cool the intake charge as it goes it.
The reason for this is it is -127 degrees F if you have
liquid nitrous. When it goes to gas it takes heat out of the
intake charge and makes room for itself up to a point. As an
aside to this when the nitrous is tuned correctly the EGT
should drop about 100 degrees when you are on the bottle. It
is really a matter of how much nitrous you use. It like most
things that add power is good up to a point and then you get
less results per unit added. My personal limit is 50% of
what the engine hp is without the nitrous. This number by
the way links to your observation on VE. for me after this
point you are adding nitrous to the point of limiting air
from however else it is getting in, carb, efi whatever...
For me practical limits sound like 350 hp for a sb engine
that is 300 to 370 inches and 600 hp from a BB of 500 and
up.. Others use more but the tuning gets so dicey that the
gain is generally not worth the constant explosions. You
also have to use a cam and headers that will flow what you
have for hp on the exhaust side of the engine too and it
becomes a very specialized piece that will not run as good
as a NA engine without the nitrous. Remember too when you
use this stuff that it is all 'bang' and no 'push'!! It is
the highest stress way to make power that I am aware of. All
the power is produced in a limited number of crankshaft
degrees, unlike a turbo :>) which has the least amount of
stress per hp produced.. How you put the nitrous in also has
some bearing on how well it works too. For me a plate system
over 250 hp is a bomb. I am sure many have had good results
with a 300 hp plate system and that is great! But
historically this is not the case. The reason for this is
the air flow of the intake manifold. If you have good
runners and bad ones then the good runners get more nitrous
too. so the hp added per cylinder is not the same. That
really does bad things trying to get the timing right and
makes the system very finicky as these air flow problems
come and go with rpm. A port system is better for
distribution but does not cool the intake charge as much so
the manifold fills up with nitrous. If I was working on a SB
engine I think for me I would run about 150 hp on a plate
and 200 hp worth of port injection.. Best of both worlds in
my mind. Turn the plate on first and then add the port
nozzles as you can use the power. For drag racing the spread
in turn on times might be milliseconds and for lsr might be
miles apart..

Many thanks to all who replied on my question on nitrous. Lots of interesting
thoughts, and much to digest.
I am not, nor am I planning to, run nitrous on any of my vehicles. This was
simply a quest for me to learn more on how it is injested and system
performance outside the combustion chamber. I am gonna try and do some thermo
and fluid dynamics on a simple math model to see if I understand it.
Again, many thanks to those who replied...

MOVE OVER! THIS IS TWO-LANES WIDE!
If you've ever gotten behind a massive SUV that you thought
should have sported an "Oversize Load" sign, just wait until
the new Unimog hits the road. The Atlanta Journal-
Constitution says it has learned that the planned
European-made SUV will be more than 9 1/2-feet tall, 20-feet
long and 7-feet wide. The new vehicle will weigh more than
6 tons. It's predicted to only get 10 miles per gallon.
The target market is wealthy people who have the money to
take it off road. Ironically, orders in the U.S. will be
taken at Freightliner truck dealers.

mentioned using a I-beam ford axle

Last year there was an Allard at speed week and ran in the 190mph range. It
also spun a couple of times. I don't think the axle had anything to do with
it, just a old Englishman wanting to go fast. There is a 34 Ford coupe here
on the coast and a friend that was not allowed to run. The axle that had
been slotted in the web area. The coupe also had a Cad V-12 with a front
mounted blower. The rules comittee felt it might have to much weight on the
axle. Just reporting the facts.

Keith:
You can successfully mount the oil tank outlet (bottom) AN fitting lower than the pump inlet AN fitting. The only
real problem you will have is initial prime of the pump. Once primed, it keeps it that way so long as you have
sufficient oil in the tank.
I don't like doing it this way (because of the time and trouble to prime the pump) but sometimes you have no choice.
Many of my past and present road race cars mount this way due to space restrictions.

I have a question about the Mounting location for a Drysump Tank..... can it
be lower then the Pump?
Here is my current situation.... the Pump is about level with the Mid point
in the tank... about 3" below were the oil return lines go in.... and about
8" higher then the Oil pick up in the bottom of the tank.....
My concern is Oil draining back into the tank and having to draw Oil into an
Empty Oil Pressure line everytime the car starts.... Should I put in a
little extra line to create a trap like a sink?

Scott,
My limited experience with this says that some of the roller chains stretch
quicker than the stock type chains. I always let them sit overnight in a can
of oil before installing to help breakin.
I'm sure some are better than others.

My dad and his brothers owned the Brisette's roadster in the 1970's and ran
it with many other's help, like our own Dan Warner. When our family had it it
was on the 1975 (I belive) Bonneville poster. They had some great runs in
that roadster: 175 on the salt with one of our reliable 6 cylinders. Then we
sold it to Tom Eiden who now runs it with Tom Evans.

List,
I seem to be good at starting riots so let me give you all something to
read at least.
Going to have a new and hopefully competitive motor in the streamliner this
year after a year of debug and my son's licensing runs. Supposed to have the
motor off the dyno several weeks ago but you have heard that before. Made a
200 mile round trip today to take the race car headers in so we could get
the proper length spark wires correctly routed. Not much room for them in
this car.
While I was there the engine builder decided I should put the engine in the
car, build the airbox to the new scoop, mount the supplemental fuel tank,
nitrous bottle, fuel pump, regulator, Hobbs switch, etc. and then take it
all back out and take it to him so he can run the complete package on the
dyno including the race car headers. Probably not a bad idea. Minimizes
surprises.
I guess I knew this would be labor intensive when I started. Six years this
June and don't dare tell my wife how much money.
Last Saturday we started the annual thrash at the NASCAR track where I work
and I was hoping to have more done on the car before that started but what
good is the last minute if you don't use it for something?
Now that you are bored to tears, you at least have something to read.

Yeah Howard I am with Joe.... anyone else's stuff is nice to hear
about...... If Miss Kathy ever finds out what this cost.... that Kitchen
will happen without my consent..... Hmmm nice to hear someone else say
that....
NOW about that Hobb's switch..... Ole Dave finally cut all that wiring and
took all the safety's out of the Nitrous.... then we set up a test Procedure
for the begining of every meet... it's kinda basic.... test the fuel...
Nitrous... and Timing .... Watch everything work independantly... Then don't
hit the button till your wide open throttle above Peak Torque.
Sounds scary but when I hit the button now it works everytime and there are
no Half way conditions.... I can make changes in Fuel Pressure without
worrying about getting below the hobbs switch setting....
Just thought I would share what it took for us to actually make this thing
run right..... K

should be starting on the firebird sometime in May or June. I have decided
to take some advice from you the people that responded to my question (thank

have it complete for the last elmirage meet this November. Safety will be
our first priority. To be honest i didn't realize how much the safety stuff
would cost. looks like it will take up most of our budget this year.

Sad news indeed.
I knew Bob and brother Jim from 60's when they were top dogs in Eagle Rock,
just over the hill from Glendale where I hung out. They had a fast 40 Ford
coupe with a early Dodge or DeSoto hemi, 6- 97s on top.
Early big time drag racers. A guy who worked for my Dad drove their belly
tank at one time. When Katie's Dad, Keith found the roadster we thought we
really had something. That thing ran 238 one year at Bonneville with Paul
Dearth driving outside the lines. He went back on course only to trip the
lights. I was with Bob Noice and Paul Stanley that year, '63? The Belly tank
is the one shown on the inside front cover of Louise's book.
Jim can frequently seen as an advisor to some current NHRA Top Fuel teams.

The insight is the gas/electric hybrid... would you classify it by the
displacement of the internal combustion engine, or as an electric (for which
I thought that there were only special construction categories)??
If classified as gas, could the electric motor be retained ?
Essentially the same questions apply to the Toyota Previa. If it ran as an
electric would the engine/generator set be considered a battery ?
The only LSR precedent I know of for hybrid thermodynamic cycles is the
"turbo compounding" rule, apparently allowing the use of "turbo machinery"
to drive the rear axle if it is feed only exhaust gasses (the "compressor"
is an internal combustion engine) and bumping the engine to the blown
classification. There was a thread regarding that rule on this list several
months ago.
While on the subject of deviant thermodynamic cycles, the old rule books
(1992, at the top of page 11) listed an Omega class, for "Engines using a
thermodynamic cycle other than Otto". Did the turbine class replace that ?
How about thermodynamic cycles other than Otto or turbines, where would they
run ?
Regards to all,
Greg

Like the Pete Jackson or Edelbrock set that runs
an idler gear so that the cam is driven by direct
gear drive off the crankshaft rather than by a
chain around two sprockets.

Does all this timing chain VS timing gear drive mean that all Fords 1903-53

Chevys were all timing gears back in those days, they never used a hi tech
chain until 1954 with the small block design. They really screwed up with
the candy coated sprockets!!!!! TTYS, Tony

Glen,
Sure hope you never saw my bright red 1949 Plymouth 2 dr. sedan with the
354 hemi in it. I used to run it in the grudge races at Puyallup Dragway on
Wednesday nights and broke all the traffic laws on the other 6 days. It had
reversed wheels painted black, traction bars, Dodge overdrive 3 speed and a
4.30 four pinion pumpkin from a 1/2 ton pickup. Still have the hub puller
with the striking wrench that I used when I sheared an axle key. Had Airlift
bags in the front coils to try and hook the squirrel up. Remember those
days?
